Android hits 83.6 percent marketshare while iOS, Windows and BlackBerry slide Thanks to low-cost smartphones and 'ease of use' By Carly Page Mon Nov 03 2014, 12:25 ANDROID captured 83.6 percent of global smartphone sales in the third quarter, while iOS, Windows and BlackBerry all saw a drop in share. That's according to the latest figures from the bean counters at Strategy Analytics, which claim that Android's market share rose from 81.4 percent in Q3 2013 to 83.6 percent this year. This, according to the firm, is thanks to affordably priced smartphones and the operating system's ease of use, aided by the growing popularity of the likes of Xiaomi and Lenovo .

Neil Mawston, executive director at Strategy Analytics, said: "Android's leadership of the global smartphone market looks unbeatable at the moment. Its low-cost services and user-friendly software remain attractive to hardware makers, operators and consumers worldwide." However, Mawston warned that Android's dominance might not continue.

"The Android platform is getting overcrowded with hundreds of hardware brands, Android smartphone prices are falling worldwide, and few Android device vendors make profits," he said.Still, Google doesn't have much to worry about for now as Android's third-quarter growth comes at the expense of rival operating systems. Even with the recent launch of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus , Apple's market share fell year on year from 13.4 percent to 12.3 percent.

The decrease came despite Apple smartphone shipments increasing from 33.8 million to 39.3 million. This, Strategy Analytics claims, is due to Apple's lack of presence in the affordable smartphone market. This is unlikely to change any time soon, as Apple recently admitted that it has no plans to produce a budget smartphone.

Microsoft's Windows Phone also had a rough quarter, claiming 3.3 percent of the smartphone market in Q3, down from 4.1 percent this time last year. The analyst outfit said: "Microsoft Windows Phone continued to struggle in China and Japan, and its global smartphone market share fell from four percent in Q3 2013 to three percent during Q3 2014." Rounding up the losses in Q3 is BlackBerry, which claimed just 0.7 percent of smartphone sales during the three-month period, down from one percent in Q3 2013.

BlackBerry shipments fell from 2.5 million to 2.3 million. µ
